We are all enjoying the same similar services that most of the other users on social media platforms are using. Most of the features are public and free to all users. But this may end soon!

Twitter is testing a new subscription model on his platform: Twitter Blue!

Yes, Twitter Blue is a subscription service. Users should PAY money directly to Twitter platform to be able to use the service.

Users can subscribe by paying $2.99 per month and benefit from Twitter Blue features. These features are not yet revealed but some bloggers predict that it may contain:

  • Enabling users to categorize their saved tweets into topic folders.

  • An extra option to re-check and correct tweet errors.

Would that be worth $2.99 per month?

Twitter is also working on multi-tier subscription model that some tiers will have more features. Like, Twitter Red or Twitter Green.

Based on a survey that Twitter has sent to some users on July 2020, it could be predicted that below new features are in the list to be added to Twitter and these features may be part of the paid subscription model:

  • Undo send – An option to recall your sent tweets within a 30-second window

  • Custom color options – New ways to customize your Twitter profile presentation

  • Advanced video publishing tools – The capacity to publish significantly longer videos in your tweets

  • Profile badges – A profile badge that links back to your business/employer

  • Auto replies – The capacity to add auto-response options to use in your tweet replies

  • Social listening – More insights into your tweet engagement and discussion around your Twitter handle

  • Brand surveys – An option to run surveys about your Twitter ads to get more feedback

  • Custom stickers and hashtags – The capability to create custom stickers and ‘hashflag’ emoji-linked hashtags

  • Job ads – Optional job ad listings

  • Administrator role management – New options to define how staff/contractors can control Twitter your account

  • Insights into other accounts – More analytics options, including the capacity to see all your past reactions with any account

  • Education resources – Access to more Twitter training courses and tools

What if these tools weren’t made available for free? What if Twitter did eventually make these available, but if a business wanted to use them, they’d have to pay, say, $4.99 per month for ‘Twitter Red’ (or whatever color it may be) membership plan?

Would you, as a business, pay?

It is said that about 200 million businesses are already on Facebook. Imagine that half of this amount (About 100 million) businesses being active on Twitter platform and imagine just %25 of these businesses pay $4.99 per month to Twitter. You do the math for the increase revenue amount goes to Twitter!

But why this move is important from creator economy’s point of view!

Well, history shows that fundamental moves like this one that Twitter is testing will be a start of a wagon movement and soon or late, other platforms will start to implement the same or similar changes in their platforms.

It means, suppose that in the future, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Youtube and other social media platforms to start implementing subscription models and they divide their users into PAID and FREE users.

So, for you, as a content creator, it could be a new challenge because you should invest and pay money directly to the platform to be able to compete with your rivals! It means, in the future, not just content creation be your unique differentiation point, but the money that you pay directly to the platform will be a key factor!
